I blame the terribly fast pacing of the show for Mary (or the audience) not being allowed a moment to reflect or breathe. Literally the scene after she has broken Bash’s heart, she is running into Francis’ arms as happy as can be. I mean, at least give us a chance to process. Torrance even mentioned in his latest eonline interview that when Laurie wrote 1x13, they didn’t know if they were going to get the back 9 pick-up, so she rushed and crammed a lot of stuff in. However, even after finding out they had gotten the pick-up, she chose to change nothing. (Yeaaah, let that sink. That could’ve been the SERIES finale. The last mash scene we ever would’ve got was him watching her have sex with Francis…. o_O)
But I digress. We did actually see Mary showing guilt/regret about Bash during her scene w Marie at the reception. Interestingly, she referred to him as Sebastian to Francis and then to Marie, both times being post-rejection. Be curious to see if that continues. Perhaps it’s Mary’s way of (consciously or sub-conciously) trying to distance herself from Bash in any way possible so she doesn’t have to deal with all the hurt. In saying that, I really hope in 1x14 we’ll see her affected by his return (they haven’t seen each other in a couple of months, apparently), maybe emotions she’s tried to repress come bubbling to the surface. I JUST WANT THE BEAUTIFUL ANGST. GIVE IT TO ME.
And yeah, the director’s cut definitely gave us a clearer idea of Mary’s POV, and it was a complete 180 from what we saw on television. It makes me relieved in a way, but regardless, the scene remains as gross as ever.
